The Fiat 500 in all its forms — city car, Abarth and the classic Nuova 500
The Fiat 500 is small but technically varied: three petrol engine families, manual, automated-manual and conventional automatic gearboxes, the Abarth performance versions and, from 1957 to 1975, the original rear-engined Nuova 500. We service and repair the modern car and restore the classic one.

Engines: FIRE, TwinAir and MultiAir
The 1.2 and 1.4 FIRE four-cylinders are simple and durable, with a timing belt that must be changed on time — heat ages belts and tensioners faster. The 0.9 TwinAir two-cylinder turbo is characterful but sensitive to oil quality. MultiAir engines control intake valve lift electro-hydraulically through an oil-fed actuator unit: the correct oil specification and clean oil are essential, and the unit is a known failure point when servicing is stretched.
Gearboxes: Dualogic
Many 500s use Dualogic, an automated manual: a conventional gearbox and clutch operated by a hydraulic actuator. Typical faults are a tired pump or accumulator, fluid leaks, and clutch wear that needs the system to relearn the clutch position. Jerky shifts or a refusal to engage gear are usually repairable without a new gearbox. Some markets’ 500s use a conventional 6-speed automatic instead.
Abarth 500 and 595
The 1.4 T-Jet turbo with higher boost puts more heat into a small engine bay: intercooler, coolant hoses, turbo oil lines and spark plugs deserve attention. Brakes and dampers are upgraded from the standard car and wear accordingly on track and mountain roads.
Chassis and body
Front suspension top mounts, drop links and anti-roll bar bushes wear and knock on rough roads; the electric power steering column can develop a clunk. The body is steel and generally well protected, but older cars need inspection of sills and floors. Small panels make cosmetic repairs and colour changes efficient.
The classic Nuova 500
The original 500 has a rear-mounted, air-cooled two-cylinder engine. Restoration covers bodywork down to bare metal, the engine and gearbox rebuild, brakes, wiring and interior. Air-cooled engines in Dubai heat need correct ignition timing, valve clearances, clean cooling fins and the right oil.

Questions
My 500 Dualogic jerks or will not engage gear. Is the gearbox finished?
Usually not. The fault is often the hydraulic pump, accumulator, fluid or clutch adaptation. We diagnose the actuator before discussing parts.
Why is the oil so important on a MultiAir engine?
Because the oil operates the intake valves through the MultiAir unit. Wrong or old oil causes faults and can damage the unit.
When should the timing belt be changed?
At the schedule interval in years or kilometres, whichever comes first. In Dubai heat we do not stretch it.
Do you restore classic Fiat 500s?
Yes: body, paint, air-cooled engine, brakes, wiring and interior.
