Why do car batteries fail? Is it faster in Dubai?

Yes, typically faster. Heat accelerates the chemical reactions that age a lead-acid battery. A battery that might last five or six years in a temperate climate commonly lasts noticeably less in a hot one, especially when the car is also parked for long periods or used for short trips.

How a lead-acid battery ages

Grid corrosion: the positive lead grids slowly corrode; the rate roughly doubles for each 10 °C rise in temperature (an Arrhenius-type relationship battery makers use as a rule of thumb). Under a bonnet in summer, battery temperatures far above 25 °C are normal.

Water loss: heat and overcharging evaporate and electrolyse water from the electrolyte, raising acid concentration and exposing plates.

Sulfation: when a battery sits partly discharged, lead sulfate crystals grow and harden, reducing usable capacity. A car parked for weeks with standby electronics draining it is the classic case.

Shedding and vibration: active material falls off the plates over time.

EFB, AGM and start-stop

Cars with start-stop systems use EFB (enhanced flooded) or AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries, designed for frequent cycling. They must be replaced with the same type, and on many cars the new battery must be registered so the charging strategy matches its age and chemistry. A standard battery fitted in place of an AGM fails early.

How to tell a battery is tired

Resting voltage after the car has stood for some hours: about 12.6–12.7 V is fully charged, around 12.4 V is roughly 75%, and below 12.2 V the battery is significantly discharged. Voltage alone does not show capacity, though: a conductance or load tester measures the battery’s ability to deliver current. Slow cranking in the morning, start-stop no longer engaging, and multiple unrelated warnings after parking are typical signs.

What helps

A battery maintainer for cars parked for weeks; longer drives rather than only short trips; a periodic test from the second summer onward; correct type and registration on replacement; and finding the source of any abnormal parasitic drain.
