PPF vs ceramic coating: what really protects the value of your car in Dubai?
They protect against different things. PPF is a physical barrier against stone chips, sand and abrasion. A ceramic coating is a chemical layer against UV, contamination and the wash damage that dulls paint over time. For value, the question is simple: what will a buyer’s paint gauge read in five years?
What damages paint here
Highway kilometres at speed with sand and construction gravel in the air; fine sand abrasion; strong UV and very high panel temperatures; bird droppings and dust that bake onto the surface; and frequent washing, which creates swirls if done badly. Stone chips are permanent; everything else can be corrected, at the cost of clear coat.
Why original paint matters for value
Buyers and inspectors of higher-value cars use paint-thickness gauges. Readings consistent with factory paint on every panel signal a car that has not been repaired. Panels with higher readings raise questions about accidents and repaints, whatever the reason. Avoiding repaints is therefore the most direct way paint protection supports resale value.
Side by side
| PPF | Ceramic coating | |
|---|---|---|
| Stone chips | Absorbs most of them | No protection |
| Sand abrasion | Protects (film wears instead of paint) | Limited |
| Wash swirls | Self-heals light swirls | Reduces them (easier washing) |
| UV / oxidation | Film shields the paint | Slows oxidation |
| Chemical stains | Resists | Resists |
| Thickness | ≈ 190–200 µm | Very thin (well below 1/10 of PPF) |
| Keeps original paint | Yes — the main value | Partly — fewer corrections needed |
| Combined | Coating on top of film | — |
General comparison. The right choice depends on the car, its use and the finish.
Our usual recommendation
For a car that does highway kilometres: PPF on the impact zones at least (bumper, bonnet, wings, mirrors, sills), ceramic coating on the rest of the body and on top of the film. For a car that mostly lives in a garage and does short trips: a coating may be enough. For a car whose value depends on original paint: full-body PPF.
