Is ceramic coating worth it, and what does it really do?
A ceramic coating is a very thin, hard, chemically bonded layer, usually based on silica (SiO₂) or polysilazane chemistry, that lowers the surface energy of the paint. Its value is chemical resistance, UV support, gloss retention and much easier cleaning. It is not armour.
Wettability: why water beads
Wettability describes how a liquid spreads on a surface. It is measured by the contact angle of a water droplet. Below 90° the surface is hydrophilic (water spreads); above 90° it is hydrophobic (water beads). Bare clear coat sits well below the range of a good coating; coating manufacturers publish contact angles above 110°.
For daily use, the sliding angle — how steep the panel must be before a droplet rolls off — matters even more than the static angle, because it decides whether dirt leaves with the water. Low surface energy also means dust, sand and traffic film bond less strongly, so a wash needs less contact and creates fewer swirls.
UV and chemical protection
Automotive clear coat already contains UV absorbers and light stabilisers; they are consumed slowly over the years. A coating adds a sacrificial, chemically resistant layer on top, and some formulations include their own UV inhibitors. It slows oxidation and fading. It also resists bird droppings, insect remains and tree sap for longer than bare paint, giving more time to remove them before they etch. In a climate where panels reach very high surface temperatures, that time window matters.
Thickness: much thinner than people think
A cured coating is extremely thin, far thinner than the clear coat underneath (typically several tens of microns) and roughly a hundred times thinner than PPF. Manufacturers rarely publish a measured thickness, and a standard paint-thickness gauge cannot resolve it. That is the honest reason a coating cannot stop stone chips or deep scratches.
What “9H” means
9H refers to the pencil hardness test: the hardest pencil in a standard set that does not scratch the film. It says the surface resists that specific test. It does not mean the coating is scratch-proof, and it is not comparable with the Mohs mineral scale.
When it is worth it
On paint that has been corrected first — a coating locks in whatever is underneath, swirls included. On cars washed often and parked outdoors. On top of PPF, where it adds the same chemical resistance and ease of cleaning to the film. Maintenance still matters: pH-neutral shampoo, a clean wash method and periodic decontamination keep the hydrophobic behaviour working.
